Hi Folks,
Well, I’m feeling better today about my decision. Thank you to all who voiced their support —–wait, do you voice our support when you write? Hmmmm, I think so. Fingering your support just doesn’t sound right…
Anyway, thanks for the support. It meant a lot to me.
Now on to the title phrase from the Star Trek tv series. It’s a split infinitive!!!!!!! You’re welcome, writing teachers! We all know the phrase and its rhythm because it came into our living rooms. It became a catch phrase.
Yes, yes, I know, I know, that’s how the language changes. That doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Case in point: we are losing our wonderful adverbs. The “ly” ending is being dropped, whether by laziness or efficiency, I don’t know. Notice it now —even on the news. something is wanted quick, not quickly. I began noticing it about six months ago. And it seems like it’s getting worse by the week.
So, as a personal campaign, please use the “ly” ending adverbs as much as you can!
Thank you.
This has been a public service announcement.
Sincerely,
Janet
