Is it just me or do the rest of you want to be able to ride a broom? Until last year I tempered this desire with the fear of falling off the bony broomstick, or at least, being uncomfortable while riding.
But after reading the book, Room on the Broom, my fears disappeared. For, as you can see in the above picture, a broom could have comfortable seating! And now, I’m happily thinking about it again. Even Buffy would have her own chair. And goggles. And a little brown bomber jacket.
And I would be wearing my Winnie-the-Pooh earmuffs and my blue and gold Land’s End stadium coat from when I went back to the U to get my El. Ed. degree.( the coat wears like iron). Nothing says you have to wear all black and a pointy hat!
I would practice flying at, oh, say, six to eight feet first, just to get the feel of it. More of a moped with ‘tude ——altitude! Then, I think I’d practice my swooping around the trees full of golden leaves still. I’d need to watch out for power lines, geese of Canadia, hawks and bald eagles. Those sparrows can be mighty snippy, too; I’ll keep an eye on them. But, I figure, once the birds realize that I’m not after their food or young or territory, they’ll leave me alone.
Just think of where you could go! Unencumbered by streets or freeways, able fly over houses, stopping to enjoy a beautiful red maple or oak, hovering to watch a sunset not blocked by buildings.
And quiet? My broom would be soooo quiet, like my dishwasher. Otherwise, how would I get Buffy to ride it?
Parking wouldn’t be a problem either, since after dismounting, I would be able to send it up on the roof to wait for me until I got done. Nobody’s gonna swipe my broom!
And, don’t worry, I won’t succumb to the offers from Fed Ex, UPS and the USPS for item delivery. Nor will I consent to work as a spy, flying around and looking in people’s windows. That’s just undignified. Spies don’t wear Winnie-the-Pooh earmuffs anyway.
So, honor the broom and those who ride it. We’re just regular folk.
Love,
Janet
