Hello, My Name Is Janet, and I’m a Sugarholic

Hiya Folks!

Well now, doesn’t this snow perk everything up a bit?  It wasn’t a lot, I can still see the grass through the snow, but it is a clean white.  And the roads seem to be in better shape than this morning.

Although, to tell the truth, the door mat by the front door was icier than any of the roads we drove to get to the clinic.  The rug has ridges in it, so as to clean off the gunk on your shoes.  This morning the  valleys in between the ridges had been filled in with icy snow so the whole mat was slick ice.  I hate it when it’s  dangerous just getting to the car!

Here’s an addendum to the NuVal story from yesterday: yes, the better foods are those with the higher scores.  Higher scores means better nutrition, less junk/chemicals  in the food.

And speaking of extra sugar put into foods, did you know that in the 1970’s, the medical and nutritional leaders got together and had to decide which was causing the problems with weight they were seeing: fat or sugar.  What was going to be the new pariah of the diet community?  50/50 chance: fat or sugar.

Well, they decided on fat as the culprit and that’s when we started seeing the low fat, non fat, zero fat, less fat, fat free on food products.  Remember that?  I do.  And we all thought we were eating much healthier with less fat.

But they put other junk into those products to make them taste better. Some were chemicals with long names.

But one was a well known entity: sugar.

And now the problem is sugar.  Back in the 70’s, if they had chosen sugar as the culprit and tried to remove it from products, we might be in a different world weight-wise now.

We also might have found out the bad effects of the sugar substitutes earlier: saccharin, aspartame.  Corn syrup in everything might not have happened.

Could a, should a , would a… we know that sugar is the problem now and that some fats are needed to keep the body operating efficiently.

Hello, my name is Janet, and I am a sugarholic.

I would be quite content with a five pound bag of sugar and a spoon.

I grew up in a home with always filled  huge cookie can made from a large Old Dutch Potato Chip can covered in contac paper.  Homemade cookies were for rest breaks, dessert, sitting down and talking,  celebrations, sadnesses.  Oftentimes there was a different cake or pie for dessert.  Sunday morning meant  sweet rolls from the local bakery.  (I used to wonder why I was crabby and crashed on Sunday afternoon) Doughnuts were made on occasion and sweet caramel rolls were made often.  Christmas meant holiday cookies, frosted Christmas tree bread for Christmas morning and New Year’s Day morning.  Christmas also meant Fattigmann, a powdered sugar coated deep fried piece of sweet dough.

It was a great place to grow up.

But now, I am smarter and know that eating sugar makes me want to eat more sugar which makes me want to eat even more sugar until I am quite comfortable eating sugar all day.

And eating sugar all day is not good for anybody, especially a cancer survivor!

Speaking of which, my oncology doc’s nurse just called with great news: the PET scan was clear!!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow I’ll tell you about Buffy and Ezekiel 4:9.

Love,

Janet

  2. Hi Hayley,
I knew it was you. 🙂
Please don’t bring any cookie butter for me, even though I have been good. I have assiduously avoided sugary stuff since October. Am losing weight. Using Eat Clean Diet and Rebecca Katz books, The Longevity Kitchen and The Cancer-Fighting Kitchen. Am off sugar. Eating complex carbs and plant based foods.
