My Car. Was In. The Garage.

Oh my goodness, yes it was!! For those who do not know the significance of this: we NEVER have either of the cars in the garage. And if we were to have a car in the garage, it wouldn’t be mine! More on this later.

Greetings Earthlings!

It’s a gorgeous day here in Minnesota and I must say we do deserve it. We’ve had such hot and sticky weather of late, with plenty of rain—-sorry, California—–I’d send some if I could. Then, last night during the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra’s outdoor concert at the Normandale Lake Band Shell, the dark clouds blew away and were replaced by blue skies  during Tchaikovsky’s Fourth.  And this morning, the cool air awakened us.

The AC is off; the windows are open. This is the kind of day that we remember and live for during the winter. This day is appreciated!!!!

Now, more about the garage. My car was in the garage because the window crank broke, causing the window to slide down  and the hubster needed to disable it in the up position. The clouds were gathering and rain threatened before he could get to it. So, drum roll, please, I parked my car in the garage.

It wasn’t in there long. In fact I didn’t even get a picture of it.

So, now you want to know why he disabled it instead of fixing it?

It’s because I made a mistake and didn’t get the car in during the warranty.  Jeep has had trouble with this crank continuing to function  correctly. And because I procrastinated,  now I’d have to pay for it. Stupid? Yes.  Do I wish I could go back and do things correctly? You bet I do.

But if I had, my little Jeep would never have had the chance to be parked in the garage and that does make me smile  just a little bit.

++++++++++ no transition++++++++++++

I am giving the welcome at my 45th high school reunion on Friday. I was voted into that position when I took a dinner break from the conference messaging that was going on with the reunion’s organizers. Dang.

Anyway, I have been working on it for  awhile now and struggling a bit. On my walk the other morning, I discovered why.

When I write to you, I write in complete sentences. I enjoy it. That’s why I do it.

But when I give a speech, I never give it from a written format. I speak from truncated notes with just the important words and phrases.  If I write it out in sentences, then I’d be too tied to the script and eye contact, one of the building blocks of a good speech, would be lost.

So, I was at a conundrum.  Two completely different ways of communicating at odds with each other. I can’t write it out in sentences because then I’d be afraid that I’d lose my spot while speaking.  I can’t write it out in sentences and then choose the important words and phrases to put on the note cards because I’d be afraid that I wouldn’t get the rhythm right.

I need to write it in an outline form—-sort of.

But then I need to make sure the transitions are smooth.

Ahhhhhh. Practice from the notecards. That’s the ticket.

So, I guess I’d better practice.  After I write out the important words and phrases, of course.

I did find, on that same morning walk,  twelve cents  and not all at the same place.  I figure that was a sign that I was on the right track, thinking wise.

I do, by the way, have the beginning and the ending of the speech done. It came to me between 3 and 4:30 this morning when I couldn’t sleep.  Now I just have the middle left.

Have a Wacky Wednesday!

Love,

Janet

  1. Keep practicing with your notecards and your speech will be wonderful. Plus, you’ll enjoy giving it when you’re so prepared. We already know you write well and speak well. Now it’s just about synchronizing, junior birdsman (woman)!!!! Ciao bella!

  2. Janet, they picked YOU to do the speech because you’re GOOD at it. Sure, you need to prepare for it. Anyone would. But, whether you’re writing or speaking, you are fun to listen to. I just wish I could be there to hear it. Maybe heckle a little. Give you a hard time. Throw tomatoes. All done with affection, of course.

  3. Thanks, Heather the Heckler! Seriously, there won’t be much to heckle about. It’s about connections we made in school and after we left in the life things we have done. I am bringing my photos from grade school for a hoot. The name tags that Lance designed with the senior pics on them are great. We are leaving early Friday morning to go to my friend Steph’s mom’s memorial service in Pigeon Falls, WI. Then we’ll drive over to Red Wing for the reunion Friday night. There’s a brunch on Sat am and then we’ll drive home. Looking forward to seeing you, Laurie, and Hayley on Sunday. Missed you at the concert last night. It rained just a little then stopped. Love, Janet

  4. Thanks, Puck! Great advice. Next practices will be standing up. Already practiced it in front of Lance. Do you remember the words to junior birdsman? I am missing some: Up in the air junior birdsman Up in the air way up high Up in the air junior birdsman Til your —–? reach the sky.

It’s three boxtops two —— ——– and one thin dime!

Can you fill in the words? Always good to hear from you. Hope your summer is going well and your retirement is not too long. It took me awhile to get into it. Love, Helena
