Hello Friends!
It is Monday and the temps are in the high thirties. We must be back in Minnesota!
Actually I don’t have a problem being back. I am really happy that the weather is so balmy. My problem is that I can’t step outside on the porch in the middle of the night and listen to the surf. I may have to suit up and sit out on the porch later today.
I love those outside sounds. The first thing we did when we checked into the room was to turn off the AC and open up the door to the lanai (balcony). Even with the roosters crowing all day, it was wonderful.
Oh, by the way, the reason for all the chickens wandering around the island is this: during an earlier hurricane, the fighting cocks, the wild chickens and the domestic chickens all got out. And propagated, and then kept propagating because there were no predators to curb their numbers. And that’s why they wander all over the island.
I did see a recipe for cooking the chickens into a soup. Basically you chop up veggies and put them into hot water along with a chicken and a rock. Boil it until the rock is tender. Then the chicken will be ready to eat. I chuckled. I also heard that you could capture one and fatten it up and then eat it.
I did see one that became a pet. It sat on the handlebars of a bike ridden by an older dude at the beach.
And speaking of older dudes, you can see the influence on Kauai of a lot of hippies that visited and then stayed. It’s in that laid back attitude. I did not see anyone who could not function, although I did get a kick out of the guy who sold me a hat in Lihue who thought my compression sleeve with the tat printed on it was totally for cosmetic appeal!
Yes, we are planning on returning to the Garden Island. It was the right island for us. We will stay somewhere different next time, but the pricey hotel complex was good to start with. It gave us a home base for exploring the island. We just didn’t need all the pool/restaurant/bar amenities.
The flight back was strenuous. Wine helped.
I somehow lost my neck pillow at LAX. I think someone else walked off with it while I was waiting for someone to do the body scan for me. Knee replacement, remember?
Oh, and for what it’s worth, if you land at Terminal 2 at LAX and leave from Terminal 5, the airport is in the shape of a horseshoe. You’ll be walking outside from one side of the horseshoe to the other; it’ll take about 20 minutes. Let’s hope you don’t have an underwear malfunction like I did and not have anywhere to fix it during that walk!
Well, it’s back to regular life now. The cats at some point while we were gone knocked down the calendar from the kitchen bulletin board. Normally this is not a problem, but I can’t find the thumbtack that held it up. My guess is that they played soccer with it, passing it to another part of the house where someone will step on it or it’s under an appliance somewhere. I’ll be checking under the stove and fridge after writing to you.
Regular life means I won’t be writing every day. I don’t write unless I have something to say. Hard to believe, but I’m usually quiet.
Thanks for coming along to Kauai with us. It was fun to share it with you.
Love,
Janet
Thank you for the trip! I absolutely loved it. If you turned off the AC and opened the door to the balcony, you are MY KIND OF PEOPLE!!!
