Greetings and Salutations from the Sewing and Movie Rooms of the Manse!!
So I was sewing today. Nothing too fancy, just finishing up some projects. And while I sewed I was listening to classical MPR.
Now, something you should know about me. I love movie music. I am a sucker for it. When I listen to Lynn Warfel discuss her choices for her program at 10 am on Saturday, I nearly always want to stop what I’m doing and WATCH THOSE MOVIES!!!!
A few weekends ago, I did just that. It was The Magnificent Seven followed by Exodus.
And, yes, it was a long afternoon.
But completely worth it.
And a few nights ago, I watched The Apartment, with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine. Wow.
Well, today’s music, performed beautifully by our own Minnesota Orchestra, was from On The Waterfront. Now it’s been a while since I’ve seen that movie for which Brando received an Oscar. And, I remember the story. Vividly.
But what I didn’t realize was what an effect the music had on me. As I listened to it, I could visualize the scenes.
I also didn’t realize that Leonard Bernstein wrote the music.
Did you?
Here’s another fact I didn’t know: for all the awards and honors that he won throughout his lifetime, he never won an Oscar.
After hearing his score for on The Waterfront and reliving the movie through it, I was humbled at his talent.
And, so, I had to watch the movie.
Folks, if you haven’t seen it in a while, or, if you have never seen it, I encourage you to watch it.
Appreciate the story. Marvel at Eva Marie Saint’s first big role. Get swept up in the music.
It came out in 1954 and it’s in black and white. But it wouldn’t be as gritty and real in color.
And, it wouldn’t be as great without Leonard Bernstein’s score.
Especially that last scene.
I wish I had heard it played at Orchestra Hall.
And, speaking of movies (hahahaha, a real transition!!!), yesterday I watched The Grand Budapest Hotel, and loved it. I do not recommend it for everyone, but I found it to be a treasure. Subtle, humorous, deftly directed, it was a perfect afternoon escape.
There was a character in it named Clothilde. She was not one of the main characters, but I did see her name in the credits.
And, that’s why I bring it up: I talked yesterday with an insurance rep named, wait for it, Clothilde!!!
What are the chances of that??? I’ve been meaning to watch that movie for years!! And when is the last time you have talked with someone named Clothilde???
Co-inky-dink.
I’m just saying.
Have a good weekend. Stay warm and dry. Watch a good movie and really listen to how the music makes it better. And hug someone you love.
Love,
Janet
