Close Encounters of the Geiger Counter Kind

Hello Friends!

Today began as an eventful experience and it hasn’t disappointed yet.  In all fairness, I do need to start just after midnight, technically today after all.  I realized that I had forgotten to wash the one green casual shirt that the hubster wanted to take with him.

When he left at 9 am.

Yep, it was 12:45 am TODAY when I started a load of wash.

I know, I know, we’ve all been there. I just thought that by now in the grand scheme of things, I’d be a little better at remembering such things.

Evidently not.

At least I wasn’t stuck slapping the shirt against the washing rock down by the stream. And I was grateful for that.

But it meant that bedtime would be closer to 2 am after I read my book and finally got to sleep.

Note: even though it was so late, I wasn’t going to give up my reading time, even for the sake of sleep.  A girl’s gotta have priorities.

Four and a half hours later I stumbled out of bed to keep the hubster company on the morning of our 41st anniversary for the few hours before he left.

Wait, what? He leaves? On our anniversary?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, he not only left the house, he left the state!!!

Remember, I did say today was eventful.

We did have a few hours before he had to leave, but in that time, I discovered that my glasses were sitting crooked on my face because the nose piece was missing on one side. so, I spent the time trying to cannibalize another pair of specs.

Early morning plus lack of sleep  plus  teeny tiny screws are not a winning combination. I decided that a trip to the eyeglass place where they have proper screwdrivers and technicians with much younger eyes was in order.

After the hubster left and the stores were open.

My sister did call and sing Happy Anniversary to us, complete with percussion and brass fanfare intro. Spare no expense. 😉

It looked like the heavens were about to open, so the hubster left a little early.  Just as he got into the car,  those heavens opened up; his timing was perfect.

As he was backing down the driveway, he just missed the recycling can which, Murphy’s Law being in operation here, was open and collecting all that rain.

Sigh.

Half an hour later when the rains had subsided and I was getting ready to get those glasses fixed AND drop off the library books that were due today ( I had forgotten about them because they were in the back seat of the car–0nly remembered them today because of the anniversary date)

Did I tell you that on the last two trips to pick up library books it was raining? And I thought I was good to go because I keep an umbrella in the car? And how ON BOTH TRIPS, the umbrella in the car was broken and unusable?  Yep. I replaced the first umbrella unknowingly with another broken umbrella.

Anyway, as I’m getting ready to go, the doorbell rings. It’s my neighbor who had seen the hubster leave and rolled up the recycling can to the garage so I wouldn’t have to get wet.

I know! I know! So nice.  Not everything eventful needed to be negative.

The rain stopped , but the dark clouds were sailing in from the west, threatening. The yard lights were on; it looked like night.

So I decided to defrost the freezer.

And then I left to get my glasses fixed and do a short Target run.

I thought it would take longer for the ice on the shelves to thaw.

Nope.

I really wasn’t gone that long. Just as my toast popped up for my lunch, an awful siren wailed announcing that we were experiencing water damage somewhere in the house.

A loud insistent voice repeated this message over and over.

Remember how the hubster is gone? And how he knows how to turn off the alarm?

I even tried Alexa because she controls everything else in the darn house.

Nope.

I decided to ignore it and go downstairs to see how bad it was.

It couldn’t be that bad, could it? I remember my mom taking hours to defrost the freezer on the top of the Coldspot fridge with the little hand held hair dryer.

It wasn’t that bad. The water had pooled under the freezer and water heater and was heading toward the carpet, but I threw down a dam of towels from the dirty clothes bin. Shazaam!!!

Eventful, remember?

And now after the rain and wind of today, the magnolia blossoms are still on the tree and their lovely scent wafts in the window.

Eventful.

(No transition here. Stop looking)

I am glad to say that after my radioiodine pill of 4/21, I am ticking  at  0.2 mR, which is below the measurement of 0.5 mR which would indicate release from the restrictions that need to be followed when you get radiation. I shouldn’t set off the machines on the Canadian border or  at any airport which might have them. I don’t need to carry the radiation info with me that explains why that geiger counter is tick, tick, ticking.

By the way, the geiger counter which was used to determine my radiation levels looked just like they did in the old movies, microphone  on a cord stretching back to the box that looks like a really old Kodak box camera. The only thing that was different was the sound was turned off, which I appreciated. The technician could read the numbers on the dial, he didn’t have to make me feel anymore wounded that I already did.

Gradually, gradually, gradually I am feeling better, my energy is returning.

I mean, for crying out loud, I defrosted the dang freezer today!!!

Again, no transition. Why are you looking?

I have to share the books I read and am reading: The Alice Network is a great read.

Now on The Lincoln Highway, and The Henna Artist. Both good.

I do read stinkers; I just don’t pass on those titles. Sometimes I don’t bother finishing them. I know. Shocking. Took a long time before I could give myself permission to do that.

Now I’m off to wash those dirty towels that dammed up the thawed freezer ice. It’s the least I can do for them.

Oh, and by the way, the alarm/voice command  that I ignored eventually stopped.

Even without Ziggy/Alexa.

Have a terrific Tuesday tomorrow. May it be peacefully eventful with smiles and hugs.

Love,

Janet
