Red Shoes, Red Shoes, and Clean Hair

Hiya Folks!

Greetings to you on this beautiful Saturday afternoon.  Wish I could be visiting Malmborg’s Open House —-or would that be Open Green House?  I know exactly where I would go first: to the perennials.

I have always bypassed the perennials because of cost and the daunting adultedness of those plants.  I mean really, you have to know what you’re doing in the garden to be able to pull off perennials.  You have to have a plan.

You have to have a permanent plan.  Yeah, I know. I don’t think it sounds like me, either.

Well, evidently when I told the hubster last fall that I wanted to cover the whole garden in weed cloth, which I still find difficult to believe, by the way, I also told him that we needed to start buying perennials for that space.

Keep in mind that we already have a garden with perennials in it,  just waiting for a permanent space in the Grand Design.

The Grand Design is the hubster’s design for the entire yard, natural and man made , conceived and drawn shortly after we moved into this house in 1988.   Yep. He’s the one that can plan on a permanent basis.

My garden used to be where the perennials wait now.   I used to have raspberries and every year I planted flowers and veggies there. Then, my garden had to move to the other side of the yard. I used to garden a lot more than I do now.

Digging is difficult with the lymphedema; try digging accurately with your non dominant hand, it’s tough. So, that’s where the idea of the weed cloth and the perennials come into focus.

Well, that, and the damage that the dang squirrels wreak on whatever food I try to grow!

Back to the perennials and Malmborgs.  I’d like to plant to help the bees and to welcome the hummingbirds. I’ll let you know how that works.

RED SHOES

Well, here’s a different way to transition: just write a subtitle above the next paragraph!

When I wrote about the Easter patent leather shoes, I listed only two colors, white and black. A good friend shared that she had a pair of RED patent leather shoes when she was little.  Oh. My. Goodness. I am in love with that idea. Think how much your feet would feel like dancing if you were wearing those!!!

And a tiara!  Red patent leather shoes and a tiara would make any day good!!!

*********

We used to get our tennis shoes—–otherwise known as our summer shoes—–at the Farmer’s Store in Red Wing.  And one year, I remember getting  red tennies. I swear I could run faster and jump higher.

The Farmer’s Store had everything. To the left on the main floor were the fabrics and beyond that, clothing for all ages. Across the aisle was the grocery store with a small school supplies area next to the bulk candy display cases. Across from the school supplies was the shoe department. In between was the staircase to the second level which had glassware and gifts and the cashier, all along that back wall.  On the third floor you could buy furniture. In the basement was hardware and paint.  It had everything. We bought our groceries there every week.

I remember that  there was a system of cables stretched across the two story space with a little basket that carried the cash up to the corner where the cashier made change, put the coins in the little silver basket, pulled the handle and sent the little basket whistling downstairs to the clerk who would  reach up, give the basket a quarter turn, unhitch it  and shake out the change. How cool is that?  And it was even better when the little basket carried your money from dry goods on first floor all the way across the store and up a story to the cashier with just a pull on the handle. And it would sway a bit on the cable as it went. You would chat a bit with the clerk while you waited for its return.

Good memories.

Well, let’s see, Red Shoes, Red Shoes, oh. Clean Hair.  Ever notice how good it feels to have clean hair after you’ve been sick for a few days?  I did get sick on Wednesday and have had a very sore throat since. Went to the doc to have her tell me, you guessed it, VIRUS.  So I asked for something for the sore throat and she gave me Super Ibuprofen. Meanwhile, my hair was sticking out all over. I’m surprised she didn’t give me a prescription for new hairdo!

Anyway, I now have clean hair and I even rolled it on the hot rollers, so I’m ready for my tiara!

Have a stupendous rest of your Saturday!

Love,

Janet

  1. Hurray for RED shoes! Hang in there with the gardening plans. I applaud your efforts at digging with your non-dominant hand. Thanks as always for your wonderful, breezing writing.
